For a brief moment, after discovering it has access to Trick Room, Comfey really excited me. The pure fairy typing renders it weak to only poison and steel whilst its unique ability Triage gives a +3 priority boost to HP restoring moves. It’s when you begin to look deeper into the possibility of using this Pokémon where the wheels begin to fall off the hype train; base 90 and 110 in Defence and Special Defence respectively is almost completely ruined by a pitiful base 51 HP stat, whilst its base 82 Sp Atk and fairly shallow move pool renders Comfey fairly one dimensional.

Pokémon Analysis – Trick Room Setter 3: Keep it Slow!
Similarly to our last Trick Room setter Misdreavus, Slowking is fairly unexplored this season; however, with well rounded stats and a vast movepool, Slowking is an interesting option to set your Trick Room this season. The main selling point for Slowking comes through its ability – Oblivious – which grants an immunity to taunt, meaning the only way to prevent Slowking from setting trick room is to either use Fake Out, or knock it out in one hit.

Japan’s updated VGC 17 Tier List!
Twitter user @amalgame_JP has today released an updated Tier List for Pokémon which can be used in the VGC 17 Format. Celesteela and Tapu Lele remain, as ever, in the S tier – considered to be two of the strongest Pokémon in the format whilst Eevee remains in the X tier – the wildcard of the format, utilising its unique Z move Extreme Evoboost!

Pokémon Analysis – Trick Room Setter 1: Mimikyu!
Regardless of the format, Trick Room has always been a prevalent feature of the VGC meta games; the ability to create a scenario where the Pokémon with the slowest speed stats on the field become the quickest opens the door for many Pokémon which wouldn’t usually see the light of day in competitive play. With the discovery of many new, slow Pokémon in Alola, Trick Room is just much of a threat as it has been in recent seasons with many Pokémon able to abuse Trick Room and a fairly wide variety of Trick Room setters.
These next few Pokémon analysis articles will focus on a few potential setters ranging from the obvious to the obscure with sets and spreads to trial, so without further ado…
